“Why is She staring?” Dipo mumbled to himself and frowned. He was at the hospital cafeteria. He had being there for like thirty minutes-yeah try eating when someone was staring at you so – right from a ten-hour straight surgery. He couldn’t fathom why anyone would be giving him a sheepish look. He was in one of his lowest moments in the ‘looks department’. He chanced a glance. Yep. Still staring.
What would a man do to get a decent meal around here?
Dipo stiffened. It’s being long but was a voice he couldn’t ever forget. He looked up from his food “Akinola”
“Haha! I thought that was you”
“When did you get back?”
“This week.” He smiled.
“So what are you doing here? Any problem?” Dipo looked concerned.
“Oh! No no. My sister just had a baby so…”
“Yeah.” Awkward silence.
“Well, I have to…”
“We have to…”
They started to talk at the same time.
“You go ahead.” Akinola said.
“No, Please do” Dipo countered.
“Okay.” He smiled. “I just wanted to suggest we meet some time. You know. Hang out, catch up on old times.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea…”
“There is a party for me on Saturday. You should come.”
“I’m busy at work…”
“I know you can make it if you really wanted to.” Awkward silence. “So…” Awkward. “I guess I will see you on Saturday?”
“Saturday like next tomorrow?”
“Yeah. I will see you then.”
“You still use your email address?”
“Cool. I will send you the details. I sincerely hope I see you. Take care of yourself”
“Hmmm” Dipo gave a noncommittal nod.
What just happened? He couldn’t believe he just agreed to a party with his friend. What had he gotten himself into? He rolled his inner eye. His life was fallen apart again. There was this encounter with an old friend, impertinence from the staff (just because he didn’t act it didn’t mean he wasn’t the owner of the hospital.), and there was the beautiful woman he met and actually acknowledged. God. What was happening? Walls he painstakingly built crumbles down in a week? Hell no. Three out of four of his resolutions were already being tampered with. He wasn’t going survive the fourth one. He wasn’t…
Beep beep beep
“Yup? Yeah. Hmm hmm. Hmmm hmm. Oh my. I’m on my way.” He ran like his whole existence depended on it. It actually did.
“Why did you let him leave like that? If e nor pay Na you go pay cos Na so so look you dey look am since morin like you never see man before.” It was one of the cafeteria attendants accusing the other one that attended to Dipo.
“He paid Na. Haba. Don’t you know him?” The sheep eyed lady from earlier asked.
“Know who? Sheybi Na doctor for this hospital. So?” She tried to look indifferent.
The sheep eyed girl looked about ready to burst. “You see as this hospital big reach?”
“Ehn” she twisted her nose in that typical way especially known to Nigerians and hissed.
“Na him get am!”
Uninterest changed to disbelief. She hit the sheep eyed girl “Na lie!”
“Why you dey beat me Na? Sheybi na gist I dey gist you? Hian!” Didn’t Ada know that her hand was painful? She hissed.
“Ehn Bose. No wonder! I sha dey look you as you dey look am. Ashawo.”
“Nawao” she rolled her eyes. “Person no fit appreciate fine thing for this canteen.”
“Fine thing plus money.”
“Na you sabi. Who no like better thing?”
